Permanent Makeup FAQ’s

  • Permanent makeup - What is it?

Permanent cosmetic makeup is cosmetic tattooing. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “micropigment implation”. The cosmetic implantation technique deposits colored pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis.

  • What are the reasons for having permanent makeup?

    • Save time
    • Look your best at all times
    • Enhances your natural beauty
    • Accentuates, corrects, or reshapes lips
    • Correct uneven brows
    • Fill in brows where hairs were lost
    • Camouflages scars
    • Re-pigmentation of areola scar or complete areola restoration after mastectomy
    • Hair loss solution for baldness
  • Who does permanent makeup benefit?

    • Busy professionals who need to look their best at all times
    • Active lifestyle
    • Contact lenses wearers
    • Visual impairment
    • Allergies to conventional cosmetics
    • People with little or no brows
    • Unsteady or tremor hands
    • Sparse or light brows and lashes
    • Freedom from daily makeup application
  • What type of permanent cosmetic procedures can be done?

Permanent cosmetic procedures can be very subtle or dramatic depending on what you are looking for. Options include:

    • Eyebrows
    • Eyeliner, top and bottom
    • Eyeshadows
    • Scar camouflage, beauty marks, hair simulation, lash enhancement and areola
    • repigmentation
  • Are permanent cosmetics really permanent?

Permanent cosmetics procedures are considered permanent because pigment is tattooed into the upper reticular part of the dermal layer of the skin and cannot be washed off. However, as with any tattoo or colorant (pigment) in general, fading can and often does occur, requiring periodic maintenance referred to as color re-enhancement or color refreshing.

The scientific structure of pigments and the requirement for periodic refreshing is identical to that of tinted hair color; faded material on furniture that may be located near a window and subject to sun exposure; house paint that is exposed to the sun and other environmental elements; pigment implanted in the skin may fade with time. This colorant periodic maintenance requirement is a good opportunity to reevaluate one’s color and design preferences.

While the concept of permanent, without any change, may seem like a perfectly good idea, think about how your tastes have changed over the years. From time to time likely you have made subtle or dramatic changes in your clothing preferences, your hair color and style, and if you wear topical makeup, those colors have changed as well.

The fact that most people will require periodic color refreshing of their permanent cosmetics is the opportune time to work with your technician to reevaluate your overall appearance profile and determine if any changes are appropriate. Longevity varies from person to person depending on their life style (sun exposure), the color(s) used for the permanent cosmetic procedure, and are also thought to be affected by topical products applied to the skin.

  • How long does each procedure take?

The initial procedure will generally take approximately two to three hours; there are records to establish, photographs to take, desired design and color to discuss, the procedure to perform and the aftercare requirements to discuss.

Follow up or color refresher procedures usually do not require the same amount of time.

  • Is the procedure painful?

Most people experience minor discomfort. This will vary according to each individual’s pain threshold. There are different methods available, however, to help with discomfort management, including various topical anesthetics that are specifically developed for our industry. Your permanent cosmetic professional should discuss these methods with you to determine which one is appropriate. To put this in perspective, thousands of body art tattoos are performed annually, possibly millions.

As a rule, traditional tattoo professionals do not use any anesthetics for their tattoo procedures. Anesthetics for permanent cosmetics are more of a tattoo service luxury because of the nature of the tattoo location and the fact that permanent cosmetics falls into the beauty treatment category.

  • Is Permanent makeup safe?

The equipment used for the permanent makeup is specifically designed for the fine detail needed for implantation into the eyebrow, eyelid and lip area. The permanent makeup pen is lightweight and easy to hold, which makes it especially appropriate for delicate procedures.

Strict sanitation guidelines are followed in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control. Fresh pigments are used for your protection. All equipment most importantly, needles, needle chambers and needle covers are all factory sterilized and individually packaged and disposed of after each procedure.

As long as the area is kept clean and all aftercare instructions are followed, you shouldn’t have any problems.

  • How long will permanent makeup last?

Once it applied it will not wash off, smudge or smear. Permanent makeup can last from 2-4 years depending on your skin type and how well you care for it. Sun exposure breaks down color faster. Exfoliating treatments will also cause color to
fade. If you are using exfoliating treatments, you should avoid the areas that have permanent makeup. Over time, your permanent makeup can become lighter and a color refreshment treatment may be needed.

  • What should I expect after the procedure?

You can expect slight swelling and redness, however this normally subsides within 1-2 days. Your permanent makeup will initially appear darker, brighter and thicker than what the end results will be.

Aftercare instructions will be reviewed and a copy will be sent home with you along with aftercare ointment. You will be asked to schedule a touch up appointment 6-8 weeks after the initial session.

  • Can I get permanent makeup procedure done while being pregnant?

You can not get any type of permanent makeup procedure done while pregnant, nursing, harvesting eggs or trying to get pregnant. NO EXCEPTIONS!

  • Can permanent makeup be done while I am under skin treatment?

Retinols/Retin-A’s, other anti-aging creams or serums containing acids will fave permanent makeup prematurely even after it’s healed.

You must be off all Retinols/Retin-A’s 30 days prior to permanent makeup appointment and for at least 30 or more after the appointment.
